“What are we going to tell Elsa?” I asked. Milo and I were sitting on my living room couch. I think there was a movie playing on the TV, but it could have been an infomercial for some revolutionary kitchen gadget for all I cared. I’d been wanting to ask that question all evening but between all the kissing and the dread in the pit of my stomach, I hadn’t found the right time. I still didn’t think it was the right time, but I had to know what he was thinking.

“I honestly have no idea. At this point, you know my sister better than I do. What do you think we should do?” Milo looked off into the distance and the pit in my stomach grew wider. That wasn’t the answer I was looking for but, then again, I had asked a trick question—there was no right answer.

“I don’t know either. But maybe it’s best if we just keep it between you and me for now.” Was I really the one saying those words? Was I suggesting a secret relationship with a co-worker? A voice in the back of my head started screaming at me: New Peri would never stand for this. You’re taking two steps back when you should be moving forward.

“If that’s what you want.” Milo grabbed my hand and I nuzzled into his shoulder, inhaling his spicy aftershave. Whatever questions or doubts I had, they’d have to wait. I was too busy enjoying the moment to worry. Or, rather, I didn’t want to face the fact that I was keeping a huge secret from my best friend.
